Ben and Emily | Rocky Mountains Colorado Couples Session
My husband and I recently made a road trip back home to Minnesota for two weeks to visit our family and friends before he deployed! On the way through we stopped in Frisco, CO for the day for our 7 year anniversary to celebrate and so I could show him one of my absolute favorite places there! The Clinton Gulch Dam Reservoir just outside of Copper Mountain, CO!
Having been here last August for a family vacation and since David wasn’t able to make it due to work, I wanted to share this beautiful place with him and so he could see why I loved it so much!
Also knowing that David would be deploying soon I wanted to have our yearly Anniversary Photos done here in a place that meant so much to me and with the one person that means the world to me plus our two adorable pups!!!!
Being a wedding and engagement photographer myself I LOVE meeting other photographers, making new photographer friends, and doing session swaps together so we both have beautiful photos with our loves!
So I reached out to a few photographers that were in the Frisco, CO and the Denver, CO areas to see who would be up for the hike and the photo swap.
Emily, from Keeping Composure Photography, said she was TOTALLY down for it so we scheduled a time that worked that day so her boyfriend, Ben, could come along with us! Be sure to go check out her work and reach out to her too if you’re in the Colorado area! She’s such a sweetheart and so great to work with!

The Morning of the Colorado Couples Session
We didn’t actually end up getting to our hotel in Frisco, CO until 4 am the morning of our anniversary so we didn’t get any sleep before our session swap at the Reservoir after having been driving for 19 hours!
We met Ben and Emily and their sweet puppy, Pepper, out at the Clinton Gulch Dam Reservoir at 6:30 am to start our hike to the back to get to the beautiful valley that I had fallen so in love with to photograph their Colorado couples session!
The hike that I thought would only take 20 minutes ended up being about 45 minutes according to my husband. We ended up having to go around several water spots along the hike that I hadn’t known would be there due to the melting snow and since I had visited a couple months later in the year the last time I was here!
Regardless we made it to the back of the Reservoir where Emily photographed our Anniversary session and I photographed their beautiful Colorado couples session with the beautiful valley behind us!
It was simply breathtaking how beautiful it was just at sunrise with the golden light sweeping the valley and with the stunning view!
About Ben and Emily
Ben and Emily met while they were both working in Copper Mountain, CO. He was working at a local coffee shop and after Emily grabbed a latte one day while he was working she all of a sudden really liked lattes. At least on the days that Ben was working there!
After they met they started snowboarding (Ben) and skiing (Emily) together! They both felt an instant comfort and excitement that they hadn’t ever experience before whenever they spent time together.
Traveling back home from Christmas while she was on the shuttle, all she could think about was calling Ben! That’s when Emily knew that he was someone special and she couldn’t WAIT to see him again when she got home!
At midnight on New Years Eve they thought it was the PERFECT time for their first kiss!
Ben and Emily have been together for just over a year and a half now and they’re both BEYOND excited to see what their future holds together!
Some Of Their Favorite Things To Do Together
- They both love spending time with their two adorable fur babies! Their 11 month old rescue puppy, Pepper, who has more energy than she knows what to do with and the sweetest face. And their cat, Shai (pronounced “Shay”), who is full of attitude and endlessly entertaining them!
- Skiing + snowboarding together.
- Exploring Colorado on day trips or weekend getaways.
- Traveling to new countries together.
- Trying new things.
- Watching Harry Potter marathons.
- Enjoying slow mornings together with coffee!
A Funny and Romantic Story
Before they started living together, Emily was going through some big career changes that were taking their toll on her…and them. They met up for dinner one night after Emily finished work and inside the house when they got home was a beautiful bouquet of flowers on the counter with a card for her.
It nearly brought Emily to tears and it was one of the sweetest things to her, until she realized that her cat, Shai, had gotten into some of the flowers. Emily was worried that the lilies would be poisonous to Shai, but she called the vet and the vet eased her mind saying that they weren’t the bad kind of lilies for cats.
This was the first time that Ben had ever given her flowers so now Emily now jokes with him that she’s not sure if she’ll ever get flowers from him again!
What They Love Most About Each Other
“I love how he keeps me laughing! If I’m having a rough moment or day, he always knows exactly what to say to make me smile or giggle. He is the kindest, most genuine person – not only to me, but to everybody else around him. The way he cares for people is so inspiring.”
“Emily has been my number one fan and supporter throughout the past year and seven months. She has been there for me when I am getting down on myself and been there for me through times of hardship. She never gives up, she is always willing to try new things (like Black Diamond runs) and it is very inspiring to watch her pursue her passion in photography and to live a happier life!”
