Choosing the Right Wedding Photographer for Your Wedding
The first wedding vendors that a newly engaged couple will normally book first for their wedding is their wedding venue, wedding photographer, and wedding planner.
When it comes time for choosing the right wedding photographer for your wedding there’s a couple of key things you need to do.
Step 1: Do Some Research
When you start researching the different wedding and engagement photographers in your area, pay extra close attention to the style of photography that you’re drawn to.
Is the photojournalistic or story telling photos more your style?
Are you more of an artistic style bride?
Are you more of a traditional style bride?
Does the more edgy or moody photos appeal to you?
Is more natural posing what you prefer?
Do you like brighter photos?
Do you like the darker, more moody photos?
Take notes on which styles you like and pin those photos to your “Wedding Photography” Pinterest board to help you in choosing the right wedding photographer for your wedding.
You’ll notice that you like one style of photography more than others.
That’s the style of photographer that you’ll want to look for when your choosing the right wedding photographer for your wedding!
Step 2: Start Looking for Wedding Photographers in Your Area with that Style and Make a List of Your Top 10
The second stop to choosing the right wedding photographer for you is to start searching for wedding photographers in your area who have that style of photography that you like.
Make a list of your top 10 favorite’s that you find so you can compare them to see which best fits your needs.
Step 3: Decide Which Wedding Photographers on that List Best Fit What Your Looking For
When choosing the right wedding photographer you want to make sure that they fit what you’re looking for.
How many hours of wedding photography coverage do they offer? Is it enough for your wedding day? If not, can you add on extra hours to your package?
Is two photographers included or just one?
Are they willing to travel to your venue or wedding location?
Do they offer beautiful custom designed albums and prints for you to order after your wedding day? Or do they offer the high resolution digitals if that’s what you’re looking for?
Does an engagement session with the package or is that extra?
Can they design your Save-the-Dates for you?
Make a list of what your looking for in your wedding photographer and narrow down your list based on that.
Step 4: Contact Them and Set Up a Consultation to Meet Them in Person or Over Video Chat
Reach out and contact the wedding photographers on your list that fit your needs to set up a consultation. This will allow you to get to know each other, you can learn more about how their process is when working with them, and you’ll be able to see if you connect well together!
This step is extremely important simply because you’ll be spending the majority of your wedding day with this person so you want to make sure you all get along well together!
Do NOT Shop For a Wedding Photographer Based on Price
When you’re choosing the right wedding photographer for your wedding DO NOT shop for them based on price.
Your wedding photos are the ONLY piece of your wedding day that you will have after it’s all over to look back on and remember it all. I can’t stress this enough!!! Everything else is only for ONE day.
Your wedding photos are FOREVER!
I’ve heard and seen too many brides who end up REGRETTING hiring their wedding photographer because they were cheap and didn’t know what they were doing. Or they had a family member or friend who was just starting out in photography photograph their wedding to try to save some money, but again, they didn’t know what they were doing.
Hearing these stories breaks my heart and I don’t want you to have to go through the same pain.
What To Do If You Are On A Tighter Budget
When you’re on a tighter budget my suggestion to you is this:
- Find a handful of wedding photographers whose work you love FIRST.
- THEN narrow them down to which photographers will fit within your budget.
- OR make some budget cuts in other areas of your wedding to accommodate the wedding photographer you love!
Remember, your wedding photos are FOREVER! The rest is only for one single day in the rest of your lives together.
