when should we book our wedding photographer?
One of the questions I see and get asked a lot is “When should we book our wedding photographer?” or “How far in advance do we need to book our wedding photographer?”. When you search Google or Pinterest for the answer the results a bride will get are all across the board so it’s can be hard to know which answer is the right answer.
To determine when YOU should book your wedding photographer there are a couple key things to take into consideration.
Do you have your wedding date set and do you have your wedding venue booked already?
This is the number one thing to help you determine the answer to your question “When should we book our wedding photographer?”.
Usually these two things go hand in hand and couples don’t set their wedding date until they’ve booked the wedding venue they want.
BUT this isn’t always the case. Sometimes couples will set their wedding date first and then search for wedding venues who have that specific date available.
You should at least have your wedding date set for sure first before you reach out to wedding photographers.
If you have your wedding date set…
Then you should start looking into booking your wedding photographer right away. The sooner the better!!! Most wedding photographers only take on a limited number of weddings per year due to the amount of time they invest into each wedding, the experience they want to be able to give to their clients, and how hard the work is for each wedding.
For me personally, I will only book 15-20 weddings per year so that I can give those 15-20 couples my complete focus and give them the best possible full service experience I can give them! If you want an amazing full service experience, lets connect!
Other photographers may book up to 30-40 weddings per year. If they have associate photographers hired onto their team, that number could increase as well.
If you don’t have your wedding date set yet…
Then you first need to have your wedding date set in stone first before you start reaching out to wedding photographers to see if they’re available. Check out this blog post for tips on “How to Find the Perfect Wedding Venue” if you want to find your perfect wedding venue first and THEN set your wedding date.
Until you have your wedding date in stone, I would recommend starting to look through the different photographers websites to see what styles you love the most and figure out what the end product is you want from your wedding photographer. Whether it be a printed album and canvases or just getting the digitals. If you want gorgeous printed products from your wedding day, lets connect!
Make a list of 8-10 different wedding photographers that you’d be interested in working with so that when you’re ready to book your wedding photographer, you already have your list of photographers you love that you can connect with to see if they’re available for your wedding date.
How important are your wedding photographs to you?
This will also help you determine the answer to your question “When should we book our wedding photographer?”.
For the couples that I work with and for myself personally back when I was a bride, the wedding photographs was one of the TOP priorities of the wedding day! As they should be! Your wedding photographs are literally THE ONE THING from your wedding day that you’ll have to look back on to remember EVERYTHING!
If your wedding photographs are one of the MOST important things to you…
So then “When should we book our wedding photographer?”…
My advice would be to book your wedding photographer ASAP! I would for sure book your wedding photographer at least a year out from your wedding date, if not sooner! 12-15 months is pretty common for a couple to book their wedding photographer!

If your wedding photographs aren’t AS important to you…
So then “When should we book our wedding photographer?”…
If your wedding photographs aren’t AS important to you then you can probably wait to book your wedding photographer 6-9 months in advance. I however do NOT recommend this. You’ll still be able to find good wedding photographers around these time frames if you look hard enough but you may not be able to book the one photographer you absolutely love because they may be booked up already. Most wedding photographers book a minimum of a year in advance.
